Prospecting

QGIS is a very powerful piece of software for creating maps. I use it for geology all the time, and have designed a short intro course that I'll make available when the site goes live.

Check it out:

I use QGIS and government data sets plus historical reports and property files extensively for placer and hard rock prospecting. Over time I'll be glad to share some of what I have learned.

Interesting to hear about your course, I'll stay tuned.

Glad to hear there are other QGIS'ers on here!

Tom is amazing with Qgis ...

I cant wait for you guys to meet/talk @Pickaxe and im definitely following this thread.....

Seems from my conversations with you guys, that both of you are amazing at using this tool to enhance your prospecting and its definitely something i need to learn more .

Especially that my old computer shit the bed and I lost all my layers... time to redo it all and may need some guidance !!

Hey! I use QGIS all the time at Mount Polley, and export them as georeferenced PDF for mine operations. Such a great tool if anyone ever wants to know anything

Awesome. I use QGIS with photogrammetry collected by my little drone, but would certainly like to learn more about working with datasets from other sources.

In QGIS I also use geoferenced PDF's all the time for NOW, SOW, and OLTC maps. I create these for a mine agent and his clients here in BC, and I rely 100% on QGIS to get the job done. Q is every bit as good as ArcGIS in my opinion (I used ArcGIS at UBC during my degree studies).

Hey there,

Recently learned that contours are now available via Google Earth with the paid Professional level membership - BUT only in the continental US at this point, so not of use in Canada, yet. iMapBC does better at this time. Still searching for Lidar data.

Hi Jon, I've got a real easy methodology for pulling 20m contours (from BC) into QGIS via a Web Mapping Service from the BC Data Catalogue. Happy to walk you through it if you'd like. Email me at alpine.rockies.consulting@gmail.com
